Clouds, 2023
36” x 48” | Made from hand-dyed cotton fabric, batting, and sashiko thread | Pieced by machine, quilted by hand
Clouds is a quilt for the firstborn of two teachers who love travel and look forward to taking their daughter around the world.
To get the gradients, I progressively over-dyed Kona cotton fabric with Rit all-purpose “camel” dye. Considering “ombré fabric” for this concept caused me to ask myself some fundamental questions about what a quilt is to me: does it need to be pieced? At what point am I just painting on fabric? Does it matter? You can see that I ultimately decided that it does not matter, and the result is as subtle and dreamy as I hoped it would be.
Clouds was designed and made between August and September of 2023 at my home in Austin, TX.
