Janine, 2024

62” x 70” | Made from cotton fabric, batting, and thread | Quilted by machine

“Janine” began as a no-buy scrap quilt that would largely utilize the leftover triangle pieces I’d saved from “The Red One” and ended as a gift for my husband’s grandmother and her family.

I met Janine three years ago on a trip to New York. We sat with her in her bedroom as she shared the view she watched through her window each day and the squirrel who would visit. Despite being a latecomer in her life, she’d regularly ask my husband on their weekly calls if I was still making quilts. So with our next trip to see her scheduled, I knew I was going to bring her one. I chose the memory of our first visit for the quilt stitching.

Janine passed before I could give her this quilt. It’s now in her home with her family members. I was so honored to give it to them.

“Janine” was designed and made between May and July 2024 at my home in Austin, TX.
